Notre-Dame : The legend of centuries – The roots and seeds of the School of Notre-Dame
During the 12th and 13th centuries, the liturgical chant of the Notre-Dame cathedral was the centre of intense speculation around the rationalization of musical durations and their notation, reflections that had immense resonances in all areas of social thought, religious and scientific.
Conducting the joint forces of his Ensemble Organum and the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris, Marcel Pérès wishes, through this concert, to present different currents that, in the continuation of Antiquity, have travelled through the ritual memory of medieval West to arrive at this accomplished stylistic form, now called the School of Notre-Dame, exactly contemporary with the construction of the building.
Thus, the great tradition that sprouted in the former Saint Stephen cathedral in the 11th century will be able to continue to vibrate, to project us into the 21st century beyond Paris, inaugurating a new dimension to the radiance of Notre-Dame in a form that could be named: Notre-Dame outside the walls…
This program was realized thanks to the partnership of the Villecroze Foundation, which offered the
Maîtrise de Notre-Dame a one-week residence to prepare it.
