Workshop: Old-Roman chant directed by Marcel Pérès
Concerts, Moissac Lauzerte/Saint Nicolas de la Grave
The old Roman chant occupies a central position in the history of religious music. He is the keystone that gives meaning, coherence and existence to the building of what should be the liturgical consciousness of Christianity, and beyond. Because, upstream, he gives us the filiation key of between the song of the Temple of Jerusalem and the heritage of Greek music. Downstream, it allows us to follow and understand the treasures of the Qur’anic chanting. Apart from some extremely restricted musical circles, this repertoire is now unknown to musicians, clerics and the public. Yet he gives us the oldest version of Greco-Latin music of late antiquity and represents the missing link between Byzantine chant, Coptic chant, Syriac chant, Arabic music and Western music.
Until the 13th century, this repertoire accompanied the papal liturgies in Rome. The installation of the papacy in Avignon was fatal for him, and he fell into oblivion. Rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century, it has still not found its essential place in the imagination of western man and in that of all civilizations, which stem from the same Semitic and Greek origins.
