Moissac : From 29 october until 2 November 2024
Composed by Ademar de Chabannes around 1024
Direction : Marcel Pérès
Aquitania was one of the most fertile artistic centres of the 11 th and 12 th centuries. Privileged meeting point because of its position on the roads to Santiago de Compostela, it cultivated the monodic and polyphonic composition as well as the art of liturgical poetry that constitutes one of the summits of medieval Latin poetry. During this session, will be studied works from one of the great monastic centers of this era, the abbey of Saint Martial in Limoges, as well as the monumental work of Ademar de Chabannes: the 72 verses of Saint Martial. Composed a thousand years ago, this work has waited until now to be sung. It is a huge fresco dedicated to Saint Martial composed in an epic fashion, as were the ancient Greek tragedies. Three choirs dialogue in a polyphonic two-voice form. This is the most complete source of what were the polyphonic traditions of the 10 th century, from the Carolingian traditions that Ademar de Chabannes placed in direct filiation of the polyphonic art used in Rome in the 8th century. These musics are transmitted through a specific musical notation called Aquitanian notation, whose subtleties we will explore. Through these songs reveals a sound and spiritual universe, developed at the end of the first millennium leaving the trace of its energy in Romanesque architecture, energy that has been waiting for more than eight centuries to return to illuminate the edge of time.
